Who Are The Vitals?
The Vitals 808 is a group of 8 musicians who came together from O'ahu, Hawaii. Their brand of reggae music is a mix of lovers rock, roots music, and conscious (& some playful) lyrics that are as diverse as the members of the band. Each member of the group has grown up in Hawaii's reggae industry but imparts their own influences from all types of music, including R&B, reggae, funk, soul, rap, EDM, island reggae, and roots music.
Established in 2013, the group has retained the majority of its original members, including Keahi Piiohia, Cyd Kamakea, Ata Boy Rosa, Brandon Berinobis, and Kainoa Ah Chong. In 2014, Nainoa Heffernan added his lead vocals and also rounded out the harmony with the other vocalists Keahi, Cyd, and Ata Boy to solidify the strength of their new voice. Due to conflicting schedules, original band members Shay Marcello and Tony Viera-Albao were forced to choose between The Vitals and their other musical groups, and so The Vitals welcomed "OG" reggae band members Guy Heresa and Darin Garcia, who are recognized locally for their deep roots in the reggae music scene.
The release of their EP in 2014 contained their first breakout hit "Fake Lover" which established their ability to reach Hawai'i's reggae listeners. Other songs on the EP, including "Natural Woman" and "Kahalu'u's Crying" also enjoyed local radio airplay and showcased the diversity of the group's musical abilities.
The Vitals 808's newest release is out now, with a full-length album that includes all 6 songs from the EP along with 5 new songs written by all four vocalists in the band. (A special shout-out to Bo Napoleon for contributing a song on the album as well). 3 of the songs "Shine" "Here We Go" and "Your Smile" have all been featured in the local radio scene since the album's release in November 2015.
